Why do some societies cultivate independent thinking and continuously produce knowledge, while others struggle to sustain intellectual freedom and creative inquiry?
Freedom of thought is more than freedom of expression. It concerns the conditions under which individuals and societies are able to think independently, examine assumptions, question inherited ideas, seek truth, and generate new knowledge.
Throughout history, civilizations have flourished when intellectual curiosity, rigorous inquiry, and responsible disagreement were encouraged. Conversely, intellectual stagnation has often accompanied environments where fear, conformity, ideological rigidity, or institutional limitations constrained independent thinking.
This research does not begin with predetermined conclusions. It seeks to understand how scholars, educators, writers, researchers, students, professionals, policymakers, and thoughtful citizens understand the present condition of freedom of thought in their own societies and across the world. Particular attention is given to Bangladesh while encouraging comparative and global perspectives.
